Newsletter Feb 2008

About a month ago, I began to notice one answer coming up more frequently than ever before.   The answer “pay off debt” was occurring in nine out of ten responses.  I am not an economist and this small voluntary survey is certainly not scientific but it seems that the general population is becoming alarmed about the economy and their debt.

I guess that is not unexpected since every news report is filled with bad news about the mortgage problem, rising costs and inflation.  I know that over just the past few months I have seen my grocery bill go up as well as my gas bill and just about every other expense.  I was in the middle of paying bills when I heard on the news, the Exxon Corporation made 40 billion dollars profit last year.  That is billion with a “B” and that is net profit.  I asked myself why Americans are not filling the streets in protest.  We should all be outraged that Exxon and other corporations are allowed to gouge prices on a needed product.  I guess most Americans are too busy trying to earn a living, take care of the kids and doing all the other things that have to be done.  No one has the time to organize a protest.

We think our politicians should be protecting us from outrageous prices, unfair practices and unsafe products but we of course know that is not true.  We have lead in our toys, poison in our medication and gouging at the pumps but we keep electing politicians who are bought by lobbyist and line their pockets with illegal money.

As someone who loves history, I think back about great events in history when people actually believe in causes so strongly that they took the time to speak out and protest.   Everyone has seen pictures of the students who fought against the Vietnam War during the 1960s.  The suffragettes not only demonstrated in the streets and went on hungry strikes (and to prison) but many gave their life for the right to vote.

So I was a little surprise to hear about a boycott planned by eBay sellers.  Sellers on eBay have had boycotts before that never took off and just fizzled with no results.   This time appears to be different.  This time the media has paid attention and it seems more sellers are on board.  The sellers (myself included) are furious of the huge increase in pricing (20% – 67% increase) and the new policy changes that will have a devastating effect on the small business owner.

The boycott is scheduled for Feb 18th  – 25th and

thousands of eBay sellers have signed petitions and pledge solidarity.  The have pledged they will not sell during the boycott week.  We all know that we can not bring down eBay in one week but we want to make a statement.  We want to watch the number of listings drop and we want to see the eBay stock price drop.  We hope that if we can affect even a slight change in the number of listings for one week then eBay may take our concerns seriously.  Some seller will lose thousands of dollars by not selling during the week but most of us believe that it is worth the small sacrifice if we get our voices heard.

I have been happily monitoring the website  http://www.powersellersunite.com/auctionsitewatch.php  and watching the number of eBay listings slowly go down over the past week.  EBay announces that it will drop the listing fee by twenty cents for one day only on Feb 13th.   Today, Feb 13th, I have watched the number of listings climb and climb all day long.  There are huge increases in the number of listings due to this “discount”.   So much for solidarity.  It only takes twenty cents to make people go back on their word and give in.  I am sure the eBay executives are laughing and patting each other on the back for breaking the boycott before it starts.  We could sure use a suffragette right now.
